Instagram’s 24-hour messaging window, explained

If you automate Instagram DMs, one rule sits under everything you build: the 24-hour messaging window. It is Meta’s way of keeping business messaging wanted rather than spammy, and it explains most of the “why can’t I just…” questions people have when they start.

The rule

A business account can message someone freely for 24 hours after that person last messaged the business. Every new message from them resets the clock. When 24 hours pass with no word from them, the window closes and automated messages stop until they write again.

What opens a window

• They send you a DM.
• They reply to your story.
• They tap a button in a message you sent them.
• They reply to a private reply you sent after their comment.

A comment on its own does not open the full window. It allows exactly one private reply, which is why comment automations lead with a message that invites a tap.

What you can’t do

You cannot start a conversation with someone who has never interacted with you. The Messaging API only lets businesses respond to people who reached out first, whether by DM, story reply or comment. Any tool promising automated cold DMs to strangers is working outside Instagram’s rules, and that is the fastest route to a restricted account.

Designing around it

• Deliver the valuable thing immediately after the tap, not the next day.
• Ask a question at the end of a flow. A reply reopens the window for another 24 hours.
• Keep delays inside a flow short. A delay that ends after the window has closed can’t send.
• Use your inbox for anything that needs a human. Automations handle the first minute; you handle the conversation.
