How comment-to-DM automation actually works on Instagram

Someone comments “LINK” and a DM lands seconds later. Here’s what happens between those two moments, and the Instagram rules that shape it.

Comment-to-DM is the automation most creators start with: you tell people to comment a word under a post, and everyone who does gets a direct message with the thing they asked for. It feels like magic from the outside. Underneath, it is a short chain of events governed by a few Instagram rules, and knowing them helps you design automations that actually deliver.

Step 1: the comment arrives

When your account is connected, Instagram notifies the automation tool about every new comment on your posts and reels through its official Messaging API. No one is logging into your account or scraping your feed. The tool checks the comment against your trigger: which post it was on, and whether it contains one of your keywords.

In MuChat, keywords match as whole words or phrases, ignoring capital letters and accents. “link”, “LINK” and “Link!” all match the keyword LINK, but “linkedin” does not. Emoji work as keywords too. Leave the keyword list empty and every comment on the post triggers the automation.

Step 2: an optional public reply

Many automations also reply publicly under the comment, something like “Sent you a DM 👀”. It tells the commenter to check their inbox, shows everyone else scrolling that the offer is real, and adds activity to the post. Rotating between a few variations keeps the thread from looking copy-pasted.

Step 3: the private reply

Here is the rule that shapes everything: Instagram lets a business send a private reply to a comment, but only one message, and only within seven days of the comment. Until the person replies or taps a button, you cannot send them a second message.

That is why good comment automations open with a short message and a single button (“Send me the link”) rather than dumping everything at once. When they tap, they have started a conversation with you, and the full messaging window opens.

Step 4: the conversation opens

Once the person taps or replies, you are inside Instagram’s standard 24-hour messaging window. Now the automation can send the actual link, a discount code, a follow-up question, or anything else in the flow. The only limit is time: the window closes 24 hours after their last message.

Step 5: tracking what happened

Links sent by MuChat go through a tracked redirect, so every automation shows how many people it reached and how many clicked. That click-through rate is the number to watch: it tells you whether the offer, the keyword and the first message are pulling their weight.

Putting it together

  1. 01Pick a keyword that is short, specific and easy to type on a phone.
  2. 02Say the keyword out loud in the video and write it in the caption.
  3. 03Open with one short message and one button.
  4. 04Deliver the goods after the tap, while the window is open.
  5. 05Check the click-through rate after a few days and adjust.
