Follow-gated links: grow followers without annoying people

A follow gate asks people to follow your account before they get the thing they commented for. Used well, it turns a post that travelled far beyond your followers into an audience you keep. Used badly, it feels like a toll booth.

How the flow works

1. 01Someone comments your keyword and gets your first DM.
2. 02If they already follow you, they get the link straight away.
3. 03If not, they get a friendly note asking them to follow, with an “I’m following” button.
4. 04When they tap it, the automation checks again and sends the link.

Instagram doesn’t always report whether someone follows you. When it won’t say, MuChat sends the link anyway rather than leaving a genuine lead stuck at the gate. The goal is to grow, not to lose people over an API hiccup.

Doing it without the annoyance

• Say it up front. “Comment GUIDE and follow to get it” in the caption means nobody feels tricked.
• Gate things that are worth a follow: a guide, a template, a discount. Not a link to a product page anyone could find.
• Keep the ask warm: “Almost there! Follow first and I’ll unlock it 🔓” beats “You must follow to continue.”
• Don’t gate everything. Use it on posts reaching new people, and keep everyday answers free.
